Introducing Pichereau Laurent – Finalist of the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024

Pichereau Laurent, a French artist, is known for his distinctive monochromatic artworks that explore the interplay of light and shadow. His style, which blends drawing and painting, often draws inspiration from historical photographs and masters of the 18th and 19th centuries. Laurent’s works convey a deep fascination with the past, using it to guide and inform present-day interpretations.

Pichereau Laurent – SHOW, 2024

One of his featured pieces, “SHOW” (mixed media, 65x50x1 cm), is inspired by a 1920s photograph from the “Roaring Twenties” in Paris, a time of joy and leisure. The artwork captures a bird’s-eye view of a theater manager replacing bulbs on a marquee, while pedestrians bustle below. Rendered in shades of gray with accents of red, the piece highlights Laurent’s signature chiaroscuro technique. The red touches, which symbolize passion, love, and fire, add a new dimension to the scene, giving it modern relevance while maintaining its historical roots.

Laurent’s journey as an artist began in childhood, and although he pursued a career in communications and finance, his passion for art remained constant. He recently reignited his artistic pursuits, developing a unique style that combines the depth of gray tones with striking red highlights. His work on chiaroscuro, influenced by old photographs and classical art, allows him to revisit famous scenes and give them fresh, contemporary meanings.

As a finalist in the category of Mixed Media for the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024, Laurent’s work will be exhibited at the Finalist Exhibition at Bakerhouse Gallery, Graz, Austria, opening to the public on Friday, October 18th, 18:00. His ability to fuse historical imagery with modern interpretations makes his work both thought-provoking and visually captivating.
