Introducing Eva Samule – Finalist of the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024

Eva Samule, a Norway-based mixed media artist originally from Latvia, is known for her deeply emotional and thought-provoking works. Specializing in contemporary art, Samule uses texture, color, and the human body to explore themes of identity, vulnerability, and the search for connection. Her journey through personal struggles and self-discovery is vividly reflected in her art.

Eva Samule – Rabbit hole, 2024

One of her standout works, “Rabbit Hole” (mixed media, oil and texture on canvas, 110x80x1.5 cm), comments on the themes of vulnerability, loss of control, and the intrusion of the unknown into the lives of the innocent. The use of a rabbit mask adds a surreal or absurd layer to the piece, making it both unsettling and thought-provoking. The artwork invites viewers to consider how the surreal can disrupt the ordinary, creating an intense visual narrative that encourages reflection on the fragility of human experience.

Samule discovered painting after moving to Norway in 2012, using art as a way to express her inner sorrows and life challenges. Her work is shaped by feelings of not belonging and her search for meaning and connection in the world. Through her pieces, Samule reminds viewers that despite feelings of isolation, art has the power to connect us and provide a sense of belonging.

As a finalist in the category of Mixed Media for the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024, Samule’s work will be displayed at the Finalist Exhibition at Bakerhouse Gallery, Graz, Austria, opening to the public on Friday, October 18th, 18:00. Her textured and emotionally charged artwork will offer viewers a glimpse into her personal world, blending surrealism with deep introspection.
