Frank Kortan, originally from Prague and now living in Germany, is a master of Surrealism, Fantastic Realism, and Trompe-l’oeil. Known for his intricate oil paintings on wood, Kortan’s work combines classical painting techniques with a surrealistic approach, creating detailed illusions that captivate the viewer.
One of his standout works is “Confidential Journey of Johann Sebastian to Northern India”, an oil painting on wood (80×60 cm). This unique piece showcases Kortan’s meticulous Trompe-l’oeil technique, merging classical European elements with rich, fantastical imagery from India. The painting is framed and signed.
Kortan has won several prestigious awards, including the World Prize of Salvador Dalí for Fine Arts and the International Prize Leonardo da Vinci. His work is part of museum collections worldwide, including the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus in Germany and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Chile.
Originally a musician, Kortan moved from Prague to Germany in 1985 and has since dedicated himself to mastering oil painting. His focus on Trompe-l’oeil allows him to create three-dimensional illusions on smooth, mirror-like wood surfaces. His technique makes each of his paintings distinct and instantly recognizable.
As a finalist in the category of Painting for the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024, Kortan’s artwork will be on display at the Finalist Exhibition, opening on Friday, October 18th, 18:00, at Bakerhouse Gallery, Graz, Austria.
