Introducing Jon Bøe Paulsen – Finalist of the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024

Jon Bøe Paulsen, an internationally acclaimed neo-realist painter from Norway, has been creating powerful narratives through his art for over four decades. Known for his mastery of the Clair Obscure technique, Paulsen uses light and dark contrasts to emphasize three-dimensional shapes and create emotionally charged portraits. His work focuses on conveying deep, complex human emotions with minimal color palettes and dramatic lighting.

Jon Bøe Paulsen – Narrow Escape, 2024

One of his standout works, “Narrow Escape” (oil on canvas, 86x115x3 cm), portrays the themes of violence and the oppression of women. The haunting realism in this piece speaks to Paulsen’s ability to tell compelling stories through his art, evoking a deep emotional response in the viewer. As Paulsen explains, “I paint not what I see, but what I hope to avoid seeing.”

Jon Bøe Paulsen is a graduate of The Norwegian State Academy of Arts in Oslo and has exhibited his work extensively across Europe and the United States. In 2023, he won two prestigious awards at the Art Renewal Center’s 17th Salon at Sotheby’s in New York. His painting “The Last Letter” also earned him the 1st Prize in “Portrait Now!” in 2021, hosted by The Carlsberg Foundation in Denmark.

As a finalist in the category of Painting for the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024, Paulsen’s work will be on display at the Finalist Exhibition at Bakerhouse Gallery, Graz, Austria, opening to the public on Friday, October 18th, 18:00. This exhibition offers art enthusiasts a chance to explore the works of 24 exceptional emerging artists.
