Mati Gelman, a self-taught photographer based in New York City, uses digital photography to explore themes of queerness, human integration with nature, and the experience of living on the margins. Originally trained as a chemist, Gelman transitioned into photography, where he now manipulates pixels and images with the same precision he once applied to matter and molecules. His work blends fine art and commercial photography, evoking a sense of both physical and emotional transformation.
One of his key works, “In The In Between” (digital photography), captures the physical experience of navigating life as a queer person in the periphery of society. This staged digital composite highlights the tension of being othered, as well as the beauty found in these complex and marginalized identities. Through his richly detailed, neo-classical approach, Gelman’s photography invites viewers to reflect on the fluidity of identity and the intersection between the natural and the divine.
Mati Gelman’s work has received international recognition, winning awards such as the Trierenberg Super Circuit Gold and the UMBRA International Photography Award. His photography has been featured in numerous exhibitions and galleries worldwide, including Artsy, Dabart, and Photoplace, and his art is featured in prominent publications like Dance Vision and Painting With Light.
As a finalist in the category of Photography for the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024, Gelman’s work will be on display at the Finalist Exhibition at Bakerhouse Gallery, Graz, Austria, opening to the public on Friday, October 18th, 18:00.
