Wolfgang Gangl, an award-winning photographer from Austria, is known for his minimalist approach to photography, characterized by geometric forms and his masterful use of chiaroscuro. His work offers a unique perspective on 20th-century fashion and portrait photography, blending admiration for the past with a contemporary lens.
One of his featured works, “Mary Poppins” (chromalux, 100x75x5 cm), is part of a series inspired by the iconic British story of Mary Poppins, written by P.L. Travers. The photograph uses the symbol of the umbrella, representing Mary Poppins’ authority and control, to evoke the whimsical yet commanding presence of the beloved character. Gangl’s minimalist design and precise composition turn this familiar figure into a modern visual statement. The piece is a limited edition, with only 3 prints in existence.
Gangl has been passionate about photography since his early childhood, starting with analog cameras and eventually transitioning to digital medium format. His works have been exhibited internationally, where they stand out for their clean lines, use of light and shadow, and attention to form. Gangl’s style brings a fresh and idiosyncratic perspective to fashion and portrait photography, making him a well-respected figure in the global photography scene.
As a finalist in the category of Photography for the scan.art Emerging Artist Prize 2024, Gangl’s work will be displayed at the Finalist Exhibition at Bakerhouse Gallery, Graz, Austria, opening to the public on Friday, October 18th, 18:00. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience Gangl’s distinctive photography, which merges minimalism with symbolic depth.
